Manchester United are yet to field two of their five summer acquisitions in a competitive fixture this season.

All of Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee have featured in the Reds’ first three matches, the latter of which marked his debut with a late winner in front of the Stretford End against Fulham on opening day.

The side’s fifth and final arrival of the summer was Manuel Ugarte, who, despite finalising his move on deadline day, was not registered in time to feature against Liverpool over the weekend. Fans are hoping he will slot straight into the starting 11 after the international break, especially after Casemiro’s despondent cameo in the first 45 minutes of last Sunday’s defeat.

Leny Yoro, unfortunately, sustained a metatarsal injury in pre-season. He required surgery to correct the complaint in August and was subsequently ruled out for three months. It remains to be seen what kind of role he’ll play upon his return, given that De Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans are all vying with the 18-year-old for a starting role.

Having attracted interest from European giants Real Madrid, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain throughout the window, it’s safe to say United achieved quite the coup when pipping the other clubs to seal Yoro’s signature. The teenage centre-half has quickly established himself as one of the most sought-after prospects in world football, and he’s now tied to Old Trafford until 2029.

Reviewing the Red Devils’ summer business, Fabrizio Romano reckons it was a resounding success when all’s said and done.

“Overall, I’d say it was a very positive window for Manchester United,” he told CaughtOffside via his Daily Briefing.

“Yoro is a generational talent, De Ligt and Mazraoui are two excellent additions, and I really like Zirkzee as he has big potential. Ugarte was expensive, but that kind of player was needed, so I think there were a number of very good additions for the club.

“The best signing that stands out for me was Yoro, In my opinion. We know Real Madrid and other top clubs also wanted him, and he looks like he has a big future at the highest level.”
