Just before the trip to Estadio de Vallecas last month to face Rayo Vallecano, FC Barcelona lost key midfield star Gavi to a fresh knee injury.

The 21-year-old fan favourite sustained the injury in a training session – with the issue occurring in the same knee that he had been operated on back in 2023.

As such, there is great caution surrounding his condition and recovery. While the option of another surgery was considered, all parties agreed to continue with conservative treatment for a few weeks.

Gavi’s family, agents meet Barcelona

Now, Gerard Romero reports that Gavi, along with his family members and agents, met with Barcelona officials earlier today to assess the player’s recovery and progress.

The plan is for the Spanish international to continue with the conservative treatment for now, and his knee will be reassessed again in a week.

Following that, based on his progress, it will be decided if there is a need for the La Masia graduate to undergo surgery.

Gavi’s setback comes as a crucial blow for both the player and the club. The 21-year-old star had excelled in pre-season this summer and was pushing for a starting berth in Hansi Flick’s plans.

The recent injury to Frenkie de Jong would have opened the doors for Gavi to have a more prominent role as well if not for the knee issue he picked up.

What is clear is that there will be no risks taken with Gavi and his recovery by rushing him back into action earlier than necessary.

For now, he will continue with the conservative treatment and the situation will be assessed in a week before determining the next steps.
