Fermin Lopez will be in New Jersey to support his FC Barcelona teammates when Spain face Argentina in the World Cup final, giving the injured midfielder the chance to reconnect with a national team journey he was unable to experience on the pitch.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Fermin will travel to the United States after receiving an invitation from the Spanish Football Federation. The 23-year-old missed the tournament after suffering a fracture to the fifth metatarsal in his right foot against Real Betis late last season.

His absence was particularly painful given his importance to Spain in recent years. Fermin was part of the squad that won Euro 2024 before playing a starring role at the Paris Olympics, scoring six goals as Spain claimed the gold medal.

Now he will be able to support a Spain side with a huge Barcelona presence. Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal are all part of the squad preparing to face Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

Fermin remains part of Spain’s journey

The invitation is a welcome gesture towards players who contributed during qualification but could not participate in the World Cup itself. Alvaro Morata and several other former squad members are also expected to attend the final.

Spain made a similar decision with Gavi during Euro 2024. Despite missing the tournament because of his serious knee injury, the Barcelona midfielder travelled to Berlin and celebrated the title alongside his teammates.

For Barca supporters, seeing Fermin receive the same treatment is significant. His injury removed him from one of the biggest stages in football, but it has clearly not removed him from the group built by Luis de la Fuente.

There will also be a strong emotional Barcelona connection around the final. Eight current Barca players could become world champions, while Messi stands between Spain and a second World Cup title.

Fermin would undoubtedly prefer to be wearing the shirt rather than watching from the stands. For now, however, his role will be to support his teammates before turning his attention towards recovery and his return to Barcelona.
