Marcos’s Palmeiras career ran alongside a catalogue of injuries that curtailed his peak and cost him the 2006 World Cup. According to Nosso Palestra, former club doctor Rubens Sampaio detailed the sequence that kept the goalkeeper out and repeatedly sidelined.

An adductor rupture ruled him out of Germany 2006, with Rogério Ceni and Dida again rivals and Júlio César impressing enough to make a squad beaten in the quarter-finals.

Sampaio recalled the problem flaring on 11 February, in a 1-1 Paulistão draw with Bragantino on a rainy Saturday, when Marcos felt his thigh after a simple movement. He did not return until 13 July, after the World Cup, in a 4-2 Brasileiro win over Vasco.

Three days later came the derby with Corinthians at Morumbi. An early collision with Rafael Moura injured his shoulder, he left for hospital and only came back in November, featuring in defeat to Goiás and victory against Paraná Clube.

Sampaio said Marcos suffered serious issues rather than minor niggles, noting a wrist ligament injury that caused instability and required surgery. In both 2006 and 2007 he played only 14 matches, and a forearm fracture against Juventus in March 2007 ended his year.

During recovery he refractured the plate, prompting further surgery, and returned only in 2008 under Vanderlei Luxemburgo. Sampaio added that time lost to wrist, adductor and forearm problems likely exceeded a year, and that Marcos could have made more than 533 appearances.
