Sunderland have landed in Nashville to begin their US tour, with a double session on Thursday before Liverpool on Saturday. Sunderland Echo reports that an initial 26-man squad has been named, revealing some notable subplots.
Winger Jocelin Ta Bi has stayed on Wearside after his visa was rejected, an appeal is under way and the club are hopeful he can still feature. With no senior right winger available, this would otherwise be a missed chance for minutes.
Wilson Isidor has linked up after World Cup duty with Haiti. Players eliminated in the round of 32 will join after Saturday, including Simon Adingra and Arthur Masuaku. Both are expected to leave this summer, and their travel suggests no deal is advanced.
Anthony Patterson and Alan Browne have travelled despite loans last season. Browne impressed at York City and should get chances across the three games, with Granit Xhaka set to rejoin after the tour. Ahmed Abdullahi has not travelled as he closes on a move to Eyüpspor.
Aji Alese stayed on Wearside despite a positive 45 minutes at York. Not travelling points towards his future lying elsewhere, with Sunderland likely to strengthen the left side later in the window. Regular football would help him reset.
With Roefs, Sadiki and Brobbey not ready until later in the tour and Alderete and Talbi back for Lens next month, Le Bris is likely to lean on the youngsters against Liverpool. Andoni Iraola's side are not full strength either, but it is a major opportunity.
