Kasper Schmeichel, 39, has called time on his career because of a serious shoulder injury, closing an era that defined Leicester City. The goalkeeper’s decade at the King Power Stadium is recalled by long-time coach Mike Stowell.
“We’ve lived goalkeeping, we’ve virtually worked together every single day for 10 years, so you get to know each other inside and the finer things,” Stowell said, speaking to LeicestershireLive.
He debuted in the Premier League for Manchester City under Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2008, then joined Notts County with him before moving to Leeds United. Another 12 months on he signed for Leicester, swiftly making the No.1 shirt his own. From 2011 to 2022 he missed just 28 league games before heading to OGC Nice, then later featured for Anderlecht and Celtic.
Premier League, FA Cup, Championship and Community Shield medals followed, alongside a lasting bond with supporters and a powerful presence in the dressing room. “He was a dream to work with and we pushed him.”
“He was a huge miss for Leicester when he went. It’s no coincidence that relegation happened without him.”
“I spoke to Kasper yesterday and said ‘you don’t need to go kicking 300 balls a day, like me, and end up with bad knees’.” “He’ll be perfect for TV, good looking lad and talks well.”
