Inter boss Cristian Chivu slams Liverpool penalty decision: “Non-existent” | OneFootball

The fallout from Inter’s narrow defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League continues, as Nerazzurri manager Cristian Chivu heavily criticised the decisive penalty awarded to the English side.

Inter hosted Liverpool at San Siro yesterday in the Champions League group stage. The match was a tightly contested affair, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut opportunities for the majority of the game. The Reds arguably created more, with Inter often facing problems in getting their attack  together.

The deadlock was controversially broken in the second half when a penalty was awarded to Liverpool. Alessandro Bastoni was penalised for a soft tug of Florian Wirtz’ shirt, as the German went down very easily. Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up to convert the spot-kick, which proved to be the difference-maker in the 1-0 win for the visitors.

The result took Liverpool inside the top eight of the competition, with two games to go.

Speaking to the press, and as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chivu was emphatic in his condemnation of the referee’s decision:

Chivu specifically addressed the decisive moment of the match, stating that the penalty was wrongly given. He was quoted as saying, “The penalty is non-existent.”

The Romanian strong comments reflect a widespread feeling of frustration among the Inter camp and their supporters, who would believe the result was unfairly decided by the controversial incident.
