Inter also considered Stuttgart’s Jamie Leweling, whom Roma almost snapped up on deadline day, and Malick Fofana, who instead transferred from Olympique Lyonnais to Sunderland for €30M. The Scudetto holders demanded a comparable fee offload their outcast.

Instead, despite some scuttlebutt, the Nerazzurri didn’t pursue Federico Chiesa. The Italian international wasn’t close to departing this time around after Liverpool changed their coach from Arne Slot to Andoni Iraola. However, he’s never been available so far due to a muscular injury.

Their system is very aggressive in certain instances and match-up, and at times they can easily afford to field a pure attacker wide. Somebody who could play there and also as a second striker would have perfectly rounded out their squad. They should have gone for it even while retaining Henrique. He arguably possesses the characteristics they seek but has rarely strung together two good performances in a row.

Considering their price tags, Diaby and Fofana would have been attainable targets if they really wanted them. Chiesa should have long departed at this point, but he had more reasons not to force his way out this time. Also, he’d struggle to maintain the same salary if he exited.
