Inter glass half full as big Serie A match looms | OneFootball

Inter have secured three wins in their opening Serie A games of the season, including a 1-0 away victory at Cagliari in which they wasted several goal-scoring chances.

Defending champions Inter have had a solid start to the new campaign, winning their opening games against Monza at home and Cagliari away, netting five times and conceding only once.

Their recent 1-0 win against Cagliari saw them produce 31 total shots, but only score once with Hakan Calhanoglu.

Coach Cristian Chivu saw the glass half full but also agreed that his men should have killed off the game.

“These are your classic games where if you don’t kill them off, you can run into trouble,” Chivu told Sky Sport Italia.

“We got a bit chaotic and stretched out in the second half, we panicked all by ourselves. We created a lot, so if there are any regrets, it’s that we didn’t convert more of the many scoring opportunities.

“It might not be good to suffer like this late on, but considering our fitness levels and the players who just came back from the World Cup, we leave Sardinia with three points and some more minutes in the legs of our players. Marcus Thuram managed 30 minutes too, Jones had his first, Stones adds some more minutes.

“The only way to get those fitness levels up is to get them playing football, so it takes time, but we’re pleased with the result.”

Yann Bisseck was introduced as a substitute in the dying minutes and was instrumental to Inter’s win thanks to a block that avoided a certain Cagliari goal.

Former Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones made his Serie A debut as a substitute in the second half, entering the field alongside his compatriot John Stones who had already played his first competitive game with the Nerazzurri in the previous round.

“They have quality and experience, coming from Manchester City and Liverpool, so playing with a certain type of pressure is their bread and butter,” Chivu said.

“They need to rediscover their fitness levels, John a little more courage to adapt to our style of football, but I have no complaints about their attitude. They put their soul and enthusiasm into it, so we are pleased to have them with us.”

Inter then secured a comeback 3-2 win over Napoli at San Siro last weekend, but lost to José Mourinho’s Real on Tuesday, September 8, in the first Champions League match of the season.

In two weeks, they’ll have another big game in Serie A, visiting Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. The Giallorossi also have three wins in the opening three league matches.
