Inter are on the lookout for a long-term heir to veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer, and according to reports in Italy, they have now established contact with the entourage of Aston Villa stopper Emiliano Martinez.

37-year-old goalkeeper Sommer is into the final year of his contract in San Siro and seems unlikely to renew as things stand.

The Nerazzurri already have a Martinez in their goalkeeping ranks – Josep – but it remains to be seen whether he will be trusted with the starting spot come the start of the 2026-27 campaign.

According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, Inter have spoken with the agents of the 2022 World Cup winner, and are hoping to establish the possible terms of a deal for the Argentina international.

Much depends on the 33-year-old’s salary demands. Martinez is currently one of Aston Villa’s higher earners, and it has been suggested that he will need to accept a reduction in wages if a move to Inter is to become feasible.

According to Tuesday’s report, the parties are expected to remain in contact over the coming weeks and potentially the next few months ahead of the summer transfer window.

Martinez is currently under contract with Aston Villa until the summer of 2029.
