Liverpool squeezed past Inter Milan under highly controversial circumstances in last night’s mammoth Champions League fixture.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, an ‘invented’ penalty sealed Inter’s fate at San Siro.
German referee Felix Zwayer cost the Nerazzurri a precious point.
Indeed, the 44-year-old awarded a dubious 88th-minute penalty to Liverpool, sending Dominik Szoboszlai to the spot.
Despite Yann Sommer’s best effort, the Hungarian’s shot was unstoppable, condemning Inter to their second successive European loss.

Though Zwayer’s mistake eventually decided the match, it’s worth mentioning that Inter didn’t perform well, especially in attack.
Indeed, the San Siro giants generated an unenviable 0.43 xG, attempting just two shots on target.
After losing yet another big match, Cristian Chivu’s charges are now at risk of missing out on a coveted top-eight finish.
Furthermore, Inter would likely need to take at least four points from their final two league-phase clashes against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.
Given their well-documented struggles against top-tier opponents, that could prove easier said than done.
