Jamie Carragher blasted referee Felix Zwayer after last night’s Champions League clash between Inter Milan and Liverpool.
Speaking to CBS Sports via FCInterNews, the former Reds defender delivered his verdict on Zwayer’s dubious penalty call.
Liverpool’s last-gasp victory at San Siro brimmed with controversy.
Indeed, when it looked like Inter would share the spoils with the Anfield giants, Felix Zwayer stole the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
Zwayer’s initial decision to allow the play to continue after Alessandro Bastoni’s soft contact with Florian Wirtz seemed correct.
However, the 44-year-old overturned his call after VAR urged him to review the incident on the side-pitch monitor.
Although it was a textbook definition of a soft penalty, Dominik Szoboszlai fully embraced the gift.
Therefore, Inter slipped to their second consecutive defeat in the Champions League this season.
Meanwhile, Arne Slot has, at least temporarily, saved his job on Merseyside.
Yet, Zwayer’s controversial judgment left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth.

Despite his illustrious Liverpool past, Carragher was brutal in his assessment of Zwayer’s performance.
Furthermore, he slammed Alessandro Bastoni’s reckless challenge on Florian Wirtz.
“I would be very angry if they gave that against me,” he admitted. “It’s not a penalty.
“But what I’d say if I were Inter’s coach or a player is: ‘Why are you pulling the shirt and giving the referee a reason to blow the whistle?’
“You don’t pull his shirt just because he’s facing the goal; he’s turned away.
“He’s not going anywhere. In this case, the blame is entirely his, but I think the referee was a bit too strict.”
Last night’s defeat has significantly derailed Inter’s chances of securing automatic last-16 qualification.
Indeed, the Nerazzurri must now seek victories against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the last two rounds.
