Former Serie A referee Gianpaolo Calvarese has backed Inter Milan’s case that they were wrongly denied a penalty in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Atalanta, declaring the Frattesi-Scalvini incident a clear foul that should have resulted in a spot kick.

Speaking to Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, Calvarese offered a methodical breakdown of all three disputed moments.

On the Dumfries-Sulemana contact that preceded Krstovic’s equaliser, he cleared Manganiello of wrongdoing.

“The high contact between the Ghanaian and the Dutchman is not a foul, and there does not appear to be a low contact either. Manganiello sees it correctly.”

Inter 1-1 Atalanta: Calvarese Sees Clear Penalty On Frattesi

His verdict on the Frattesi incident was starkly different.

Frattesi gets to the ball first and receives a kick from the defender, a penalty is missing for Inter.”

The assessment aligns with the views already expressed by the AIA, Corriere dello Sport and Gazzetta dello Sport, adding further weight to the consensus that the Nerazzurri were genuinely wronged.

On the one decision that did go Inter’s way, Calvarese was equally clear.

“Dumfries does not commit a foul on Kolasinac, he jumps fairly without extending his elbow. Manganiello is right to let play continue.”

Three incidents, three verdicts, and on the one that mattered most, the conclusion is unanimous.
