Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu believes Davide Frattesi can still improve despite an impressive performance against Venezia.

During the post-match conference via FCInterNews, the 45-year-old urged the midfielder to regain his confidence.

The Nerazzurri put Venezia to the sword last night, cruising to a dominant 5-1 win on their way to reaching the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.

Furthermore, Andy Diouf and Francesco Pio Esposito scored their first club goals at San Siro.

Meanwhile, Marcus Thuram netted a double, returning to the scoresheet for the first time since mid-September.

It’s also worth noting that Ange-Yoan Bonny scored a screamer off the bench, while Frattesi chipped in with two assists.

Despite spending most of the first season on the fringes, the Italian midfielder looked lively last night.

Indeed, he set up Diouf for the opening goal before assisting Thuram at the beginning of the second half.

However, Chivu believes there’s still room for improvement.

“We’re happy with the performance and the seriousness shown on the pitch, including by the substitutes,” Chivu said. “We’re also happy for the players who made their debuts.

“Cocchi had already debuted last year and sent me a message while I was in Parma.

“These are players who help us in training and give their best. We’re pleased for Diouf, who played 90 minutes in a position that isn’t his and accepted it willingly.

“He also knows that the work he does every day pays off. He showed patience and intelligence in ‘learning’ from others.

“The credit goes to everyone; the group has welcomed and embraced all the players. It’s a serious group that strives to improve every day.”

Then, Chivu delivered his verdict on Frattesi’s performance.

“Frattesi was still carrying the effects of his injury from this summer and rushed his recovery.

“We should have managed him better, but he never stopped training. We appreciated that; we’re aware that Davide can do better, and he showed that again tonight.

“He needs to regain fitness and also rebuild confidence mentally. We’re happy with how he’s responding; he knows he can do better.”

Chivu Praises Josep Martinez & Inter Strikers

Josep Martinez returned between the sticks for the first time since a tragic car accident in late October.

Despite failing to keep a clean sheet, it was important for the Spaniard to return to the pitch.

“We were there for him and understood the moment,” Chivu said. “His emotional state is better described by him.

“We’re just happy to have seen him in goal making saves. He had the chance to play a full 90 minutes.

“I didn’t have time to ask him how he felt after the match because it’s always a whirlwind, and I had to come here to speak.

“This group moves forward with their heads held high.”

Finally, the Nerazzurri boss heaped praise on his free-scoring strikers.

“The credit goes to those who scouted and brought them here,” he said. “Then to the players themselves for integrating well, and to their teammates who helped.

“Occasionally, some unexpected cases pop up, but the stats you know are impressive.

“They’re aware they can improve, and the positive thing for me is that they work hard because they’re never satisfied.

“Bonny didn’t seem like he had just had three days of fever. I had told him he would play 15 minutes.

“However, I ignored it and put him in the last half-hour because I didn’t want Thuram on the pitch for more than 60 minutes.

“I didn’t keep my word, but I’m happy he scored a goal that erased negative thoughts.
