Inter Milan have made enquiries about Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt, with the Nerazzurri hoping to take advantage of the Germany international’s expiring contract to bring him in on a free transfer, though his wage demands represent a significant stumbling block.

Brandt is one of the finest players in his position in European football and his availability on a free transfer has attracted considerable interest.

Inter are among the clubs to have asked for information, drawn to the prospect of landing a creative midfielder of his quality without a transfer fee, as per L’Interista.

Since Oaktree’s takeover, the club have significantly tightened their wage structure, making high-salary signings from abroad increasingly difficult to execute.

The problem is stark.

Brandt currently earns around €7 million net per season at Dortmund, excluding bonuses, a figure that only Lautaro Martinez surpasses at Inter.

Dimarco and the vast majority of the squad earn considerably less. For a deal to work, Brandt would need to accept a substantial pay cut, and that responsibility would fall almost entirely on the player himself, given that Inter are unlikely to break their internal salary structure for any individual signing regardless of quality.

Whether Brandt would be willing to reduce his earnings significantly to join the Nerazzurri remains the central question.

If the answer is yes, Inter have a genuine interest. If not, the pursuit is unlikely to progress beyond the enquiry stage.
