Inter captain Martinez has had some fitness struggles at the start of this campaign.

That is perhaps not surprising given the hectic summer that the Argentine had.

Martinez was in action at the Copa America with his national team.

And the Albiceleste went all the way at that tournament, with Martinez scoring the winner in the final against Colombia.

That deep run into the international tournament meant that Martinez returned to training later than any other player in Inter’s squad.

The Argentine even cut his vacation short by a couple days. But he still only began his preseason a little over a week before the season began.

Inter Captain Lautaro Martinez A Doubt For Atalanta Clash

Martinez started Inter’s first Serie A match of the season away to Genoa.

There was an evident lack of sharpness in the Nerazzurri captain’s performance, however.

Then, over the weekend, Martinez was absent from Inter’s second mach of the campaign against Lecce. Mehdi Taremi started in his place.

The reason for Martinez’s absence this weekend was a muscle problem.

The Argentine had felt some muscular fatigue on Friday. Therefore, he was not able to be part of the squad against Lecce even though the injury was hardly serious.

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi confirmed that Martinez’s condition would be monitored in view of Inter’s next match. The Nerazzurri host Atalanta on Friday, their final match before the international break.

And according to the Corriere, there is doubt that the Inter captain can return for that match.

Martinez’s condition has improved compared to Friday. But he is still nowhere near 100%.

Therefore, tomorrow and Wednesday will be particularly crucial in determining whether Martinez can return on Friday.

Martinez could at least push for a place on the bench, although naturally there is no desire to take any risks with his fitness.

If the Argentine cannot make it for the Atalanta match, then he should certainly be back for the first match back after the international break against Monza.
