Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martínez has insisted that winning the Champions League remains a major ambition for the Italian club, but stressed that lifting the trophy cannot become an obsession as they prepare to face Real Madrid.

Lautaro was speaking ahead of Inter’s opening group-stage fixture against Madrid, with the Argentine making clear that his side is targeting the biggest prize in European football without allowing the pressure surrounding it to affect their approach.

“It’s a goal. As I always say, we dream of everything. It’s not an obsession. We have to stay calm. This competition is highly prestigious, with teams of immense calibre. 

“Of course it’s a goal—I’ve been saying that since I arrived,” he said, as per Mundo Deportivo.

Praise for Kylian Mbappe

Lautaro specifically highlighted Kylian Mbappe, describing the Frenchman as “one of the best forwards in the world”. 

Yet he also stressed that attacking players have responsibilities without the ball.

“It depends on each team, each coach, and each player’s characteristics. The way we play as a team involves pressing and staying alert on defence.

“Even if the coach doesn’t ask me to do it, it comes naturally to me,” he explained.

Mourinho reunion adds emotion

There is also a significant historical connection surrounding the fixture.

Lautaro acknowledged that he knows the story of Inter’s Champions League triumph 16 years ago, when the club defeated Bayern Munich in the final. 

That success came under Jose Mourinho, who is now in charge of Real Madrid.

“I know the story very well and what happened. But today we’re a long way from what happened back then. 

“I’m fully focused on doing my job to the best of my ability and on the team working together to achieve a positive result,” he said.

“He’s a coach who has won major titles at this club.

“We have the utmost respect for him, but we’re focused on preparing well for tomorrow’s match,” Lautaro added.

Inter confident ahead of Real Madrid test

Lastly, Lautaro’s assessment of Madrid was respectful but not intimidated.

“We’re facing a great team, with many champions and top-level players, but we have our own strengths—players who prove year after year that they’re at a very high level. 

“We are growing as a team, as a group.

“We know who we’re up against, and we’ve prepared for this match as best as we can. We’ve recovered well; we’re ready,” he concluded.
