Cristian Chivu and his ability to communicate across cultures is one of the less discussed but genuinely important factors behind Inter Milan and the cohesive dressing room this season.
The Romanian head coach speaks four languages fluently, Romanian, Italian, English and Dutch, and carries a working understanding of Spanish, French and German without speaking them actively, according to Corriere dello Sport.
Of the four, Dutch is the most rusty.
Chivu left Amsterdam in the summer of 2003 after four years at Ajax, and the language has naturally faded with time.
English, however, has become his most valuable tool in day-to-day management at Appiano Gentile.
With a squad spanning numerous nationalities, the ability to communicate directly without relying on translators is a significant advantage.
And, indeed, one that has had a measurable impact on the integration of new arrivals.
The contrast with his predecessor is telling.
Yann Bisseck’s interview with Kicker, in which he described early communication difficulties under Simone Inzaghi, highlighted just how much a shared language matters when players first arrive.
Chivu has addressed that gap directly.
He spoke English with Sucic and Diouf from day one, smoothing their transition considerably.
Luis Henrique presented more of a challenge, the Brazilian does not speak English, but Carlos Augusto stepped in as an informal bridge, and the former Marseille winger now communicates with Chivu in Italian.
Italian remains the official language of all tactical meetings.
Beyond the dressing room, Chivu’s English also serves him on the pitch, communicating with referees, his staff and fellow coaches.
His brief exchange with Cesc Fabregas after the most recent Como vs Inter clash was one small example of a broader confidence in operating across language barriers that has become a quiet but real strength of his management style.
