It has always looked to be the case that this summer would be much quieter than last one for Inter.

Last time around, twelve players left the Nerazzurri. And twelve new ones came in to take their place.

That reshuffle has given Inter’s squad a strong balance – both in terms of the starting eleven, and the depth options.

And the Nerazzurri already wrapped up two big signings months ago. Mehdi Taremi and Piotr Zielinski will both arrive on free transfers.

Inter have therefore seen the next order of business to be signing a long-term starting goalkeeper.

The Nerazzurri had initially been looking to sign Athletico Paranaense’s Bento.

Inter also eyed up Udinese’s Maduka Okoye and Lazio’s Christos Mandas from within Serie A. And Villarreal keeper Filip Jorgensen is another player whose agent they contact.

But in the last couple weeks, it is Genoa goalkeeper Martinez who Inter have been working to sign.

The Nerazzurri should wrap up the Spain international’s transfer in a couple of days.

Martinez will spend next season as the backup to Yann Sommer in goal. Then, Inter hope, the 26-year-old former RB Leipzig keeper can replace Sommer in the long term.

This might end up being the most high profile piece of business that Inter have left.

There was a scare with midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu. A shock departure of the Turk would completely upend the Nerazzurri’s plans to largely keep the squad together.

But it now looks abundantly clear that Calhanoglu will stay, despite Bayern Munich links.

Therefore, Inter can stick to their idea of largely focusing on securing the team that won the Serie A title in dominant fashion last season.

The biggest uncertainty now looks to be the future of Denzel Dumfries.

Inter are aiming to extend the Dutchman’s contract. But if he doesn’t pen a new deal, they won’t hesitate to sell him this summer.

If Dumfries leaves then signing a replacement will be a priority. Bologna’s Dan Ndoye looks to be the priority.

And then there is striker Marko Arnautovic. Inter would certainly listen to offers for the Austrian, who has one year left on his contract.

And if Inter were to sell Arnautovic, then they would be ready to move for Genoa’s Albert Gudmundsson as his replacement.
