Yesterday, Inter got some unexpected and very unwelcome news regarding one of their players.

25-year-old wingback Buchanan suffered a major injury during training with the Canadian national team.

Buchanan has been at the Copa America with Canada. He has played in all three of his national team’s group stage matches.

However, Buchanan will not play any further role at the tournament.

And it will also be a long while before the Canadian takes to the pitch for Inter as well.

Buchanan has suffered serious injury – a tibia fracture. This will take him no less than four or five months to recover from.

Therefore, the earliest that Buchanan could be back in training would be November.

There would be doubts about whether the Canadian can be back on the pitch in 2024. And match fitness and form will also be concerns immediately after his recovery.

Inter’s plan was always to have a relatively quiet transfer window.

The Nerazzurri have already done a lot of their transfer business for the summer. They have secured signings of Piotr Zielinski, Mehdi Taremi, and Josep Martinez early.

But Inter know as well as anyone that surprises and unexpected contingencies happen.

And Buchanan’s major injury certainly falls into that category.

Inter only signed the 25-year-old in January. He came in, ironically enough, to cover for Juan Cuadrado who missed several months after undergoing surgery.

Buchanan is adept at playing on the right. But over the first half-season as an Inter player, coach Simone Inzaghi exclusively used the Canadian as a left-wingback.

The assumption was that Buchanan would be a key player for Inter’s depth on the flanks for next season.

But now, the Canadian looks set to miss the first few months of next season.

Therefore, Inter may feel that they have no option except to sign a player to take his place in the squad, at least on a temporary basis.
