Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries has delivered an honest assessment of his current form after returning from a lengthy layoff.
During today’s press conference, the 29-year-old addressed his current condition, as reported by FCInterNews.
Currently away on international duty, Denzel Dumfries has just returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Indeed, he suffered a severe ankle injury during Inter’s 20- home win over Lazio at the start of November.
After undergoing surgery in December, he had to wait until March to rejoin the Nerazzurri squad.
Meanwhile, Cristian Chivu has handed the former PSV Eindhoven defenders back-to-back starts in Serie A.
However, Dumfries was a shadow of his former self against both Atalanta and Fiorentina.
In his defense, he is still trying to find his rhythm following a five-month layoff.
Despite being inactive for the majority of the season, Dumfries has received Ronald Koeman’s call-up for the March friendlies.
Furthermore, he registered an assist in the Netherlands’ 2-1 win over Norway last week.
“It hasn’t been a pleasant period,” Dumfries said. “If you’re a footballer, you want to play. Now my preparation in training is different compared to before. It takes more time and involves a very specific program.
“I’m still happy to be back. The key thing now is to keep going on this path, also because I’m not yet the player I used to be. It will take a bit more time,” he commented on his starting berth in the national team.
“When things didn’t go well defensively in the previous match, it was up to me to say something, and that’s exactly what I did. The other experienced players and I are not afraid to voice our opinion.”
Asked whether he feels indispensable, Dumfries replied: “No, I don’t feel like an undisputed starter. There’s strong competition. You have to prove your worth in every national team match.”
