Inter Milan wingback Federico Dimarco has hit back at those who had questioned his side’s Serie A credentials before the start of the season.
Speaking to Sport Mediaset via FCInterNews, the Italian star also delivered his verdict on last night’s loss to AC Milan.
Despite leading the way in Serie A since mid-November, Inter have struggled in ‘big games’ this season.
Indeed, that has been the Nerazzurri’s Achilles heel under Cristian Chivu.
Yesterday’s frustrating 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Rossoneri marked Inter’s fourth big-game loss in Serie A this term.
However, it was not an excuse for Inter’s uneventful performance.
Nevertheless, Chivu’s men remain at the top of the standings, boasting a seven-point cushion on second-placed Milan.
Therefore, it will take something truly spectacular from Massimiliano Allegri’s side to clinch the Scudetto.
Commenting on the derby heartbreak, Dimarco said: “We created very little, we could have created more and been more incisive in front of goal.
“But we need to maintain balance and stay calm. We’re seven points clear with ten games to go; everything is still in our hands.”
Dimarco also explained Inter’s approach in the second half.
“We had prepared to stay in a mid-block because we knew Milan are dangerous on the counter.
“When you go a goal down, you always try to recover, raise the pressing, and push up your line. The second half seemed one-sided, but we didn’t create any clear chances.”
However, he refused to search for excuses.
“I don’t know about that, and I’m definitely not looking for excuses. Whoever was missing or not… We are Inter. We are all strong players, and anyone on the pitch knows they have to give their maximum.”
Finally, he blasted Inter’s critics, insisting the Nerazzurri are not afraid of big games.
“We haven’t won a derby in a long time, but as I said, we’re seven points clear. At the start of the season, some people said we wouldn’t even finish in the top four.
“That’s thanks to the team, which must stay balanced, remain calm, and focus on one game at a time.”
