Inter Milan are pushing to secure the services of Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, but they still have some issues to solve before they reach the finish line.
The Nerazzurri have parted ways with Yann Sommer after three years of service, promoting Josep Martinez to the first-choice role. Therefore, they’re looking to pair the Spaniard with an experienced goalkeeper who is competent enough to fill in for the former Genoa man when required.
In recent weeks, Provedel emerged as Inter’s first choice. The Italian champions have reportedly made important strides on this front. However, Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla reveals two obstacles that the Nerazzurri must overcome.
First of all, Provedel’s current salary is higher than Martinez’s, which could disrupt the balance, given that the 28-year-old is supposed to be the No.1 at the club. Second, Lazio are asking €4-5 million to sell the Italian, even though his contract will expire next year. Inter are keen to negotiate a lower transfer fee.
Pedulla expects a meeting between Inter and Provedel’s entourage to take place in the coming days, while Tuttosport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) claims that the former Spezia has already asked the Biancocelesti management to grant him leave, as he is keen to join Cristian Chivu’s squad.
Provedel has been Lazio’s first choice since joining the club in 2022. However, Gennaro Gattuso is planning to start the campaign with Christos Mandas as his first choice. The 24-year-old is returning for an unsuccessful loan stint at Bournemouth, who are unlikely to exercise their option to buy him.
Moreover, Edoardo Motta, who produced remarkable displays while filling in for the injured Provedel in recent months, will be the second-choice goalkeeper, leaving the experienced Italian as the odd man out.
