Inter full-back Denzel Dumfries has opened up about the difficult months he endured after suffering his ankle injury earlier this season, revealing that surgery only became necessary after initial assessments suggested the problem was minor.
Speaking to De Telegraaf after the Netherlands’ 2-1 victory over Norway, the Inter Milan wing-back reflected candidly on a period that threatened his World Cup hopes.
“At first we thought the injury was not serious, but then I was told surgery was necessary,” he said.
The procedure ultimately proved successful.
And, indeed, Dumfries credits modern medical techniques for accelerating his recovery significantly.
“It is very complicated to explain precisely, but I gained several months,” he explained.
“I know that my ankle is now well fixed.”
That confidence has translated onto the pitch.
Indeed, his physicality and directness immediately evident in the matches he has featured in.
He also touched on his partnership with Juventus midfielder Teun Koopmeiners for the Netherlands.
“He is left-footed and moves a lot. For me, that creates more space out wide.”
At almost 30, Dumfries shows no signs of slowing down, and with the World Cup firmly in his sights, his comeback could not have come at a better time for both club and country.
