Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries feels that the Nerazzurri players “all got into the game” to defend against Arsenal.
The Dutchman spoke to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, after the 1-0 Champions Legaue victory.
Inter had a tough task holding out for a clean sheet against Arsenal yesterday.
The Gunners are certainly one of Europe’s most formidable teams.
Arsenal have pushed Manchester City for the Premier League title in recent seasons. And last campaign they reached the Champions League quarterfinals, only going out to Bayern Munich.
Therefore, there was a sense that yesterday’s match pitted two teams with a realistic chance of winning Europe’s top club competition against each other.
In the first half of yesterday’s match, both Inter and Arsenal had attacking spells.
It was right at the end of the half that the Nerazzurri went ahead. Hakan Calhanoglu put them ahead from the penalty spot after Mikel Merino had handled the ball in the area.
And then in the second, Inter protected what they had fiercely.
Arsenal certainly threw everything they had at the Nerazzurri.
The Premier League side dominated possession. And they kept the ball in Inter’s half, circulating it and probing for opportunities.
But all over the pitch, Inter were able to deny Arsenal the space to create anything really dangerous.
The Nerazzurri would calculate when to put pressure on the ball, but always have plenty of defensive cover. This was an approach that needed a lot of discipline.
After the match, Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries said that “It’s a huge win for us.”
“Arsenal are a very strong team,” the Dutchman said. “But we played a great match, I’m extremely happy.”
“Today we defended extremely well,” Dumfries said. “We all got into the game, we stayed focused.”
