Inter Milan are plotting a pathway into the first team for defender Tomas Palacios similar to that of Yann Bisseck.
This according to Italian outlet Gazzetta.it. They report that the Nerazzurri expect that it will take a few months, but the Argentine should start to get more and more minutes.
21-year-old defender Palacios made his first ever appearance for Inter yesterday evening.
The Argentine came on as a substitute in the second half of a 3-0 Serie A win over Empoli.
In truth, it was hardly the most consequential of appearances for Palacios.
Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi gave the 21-year-old a run-out when the match had long been wrapped up already.
But this was still an important opportunity for Palacios to take to the pitch. And from his coach, it was the reward for a lot of hard work fitting in in training over the past few months.
Palacios arrived at Inter in the final days of the summer transfer window.
The Argentine is a player who the Nerazzurri signed for the future rather than as a reinforcement to their defense for the short term.
Therefore, it has not been surprising that Palacios has yet to feature. But the Argentine’s appearance yesterday was certainly a big milestone.
It does not mean that Palacios will suddenly become a regular in the lineup.
But for the first time since the Argentine joined, Inzaghi has put his trust in the young defender.
If anything, Palacios is in the same position that Yann Bisseck was in twelve months ago.
Like Palacios, Bisseck arrived at Inter as a player who was seen as a defender for the future.
The German made the move from Aarhus in the Danish top flight. Therefore, it was always going to be a massive step up to play for a club like Inter in Serie A.
It is a similar situation with Palacios. The 21-year-old has had to adjust from playing at a lower level in the Argentine league.
After a couple early cameo appearances, it wasn’t until November that the German started to really get opportunities.
But over the second half of last season, Bisseck really staked his claim in the Inter team.
While hardly a guaranteed starter, Bisseck did get the nod quite a few times. Even ahead of the more experienced Benjamin Pavard.
And at the start of this season, Bisseck has found himself in a much different situation compared to the start of the last one.
The 24-year-old has started plenty of matches already this season. These included yesterday’s match against Empoli.
Bisseck got his most high-profile start to date for Inter last month. He was in the eleven for a Champions League match against Manchester City.
Perhaps it would be optimistic to expect that same level of importance for Palacios within twelve months of joining.
But Inter do back the Argentine to cement his place in the team.
The next few months should see Palacios continue to get appearances like yesterday’s.
But over the second half of the season, the 21-year-old can start to have a more prominent role. He will likely even begin starting matches.
Inter will have an absolutely punishing fixture list for the entirety of the rest of the campaign.
Therefore, Inter will find their squad depth put to the test.
That will mean plenty of potential opportunities for Palacios.
And Inter are hoping that before long Palacios, like Bisseck before him, will start finding his feet as a regular starter.
