Nerazzurri President Beppe Marotta feels that Inter Milan are “obligated” to think about both the Serie A title and the Champions League.
Marotta spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, ahead of this evening’s Serie A clash with Lazio. He was not hiding his ambition for Inter.
As has been the case for a while now, Inter are juggling domestic and European commitments.
That has not been easy for the Nerazzurri in recent seasons.
Last campaign, Inter won the Serie A title in dominant fashion. However, they crashed out of the Champions League at the round of sixteen against Atletico Madrid.
There was a sense that some of the tiredness from overextending the squad across multiple competition had reached its limit against Atletico.
Meanwhile, the previous season was a highly successful one for Inter in Europe. They reached the final of the Champions League.
However, in Serie A, the Nerazzurri had a campaign that was highly erratic.
Inter’s challenge is to find a way to balance Serie A and the Champions League. But Nerazzurri President Beppe Marotta isn’t backing down from it.
“It’s in our DNA,” the Inter President said. “We have an obligation to compete at our best in all competitions.”
“We’ll try to go all the way in the Champions League,” Marotta said.
“And win the Scudetto.”
“We’re obligated to think that way,” Marotta made clear. “Then if another team is better than us, hats off to them, we’ll congratulate them.”
“But Inter cannot think about the minimum or settle.”
Meanwhile, Marotta gave his thoughts on the importance of this evening’s match against Lazio for Inter.
“I believe this evening will be important for evaluating the team’s performance level,” he argued.
“The league table is getting a bit more spread out. But it’s still midway through the season, so we shouldn’t talk about this or that team making a break for it, or contenders for the Scudetto.”
“It’s important that we give a response,” Marotta said. “The players are aware of that.”
“I think it will be a good match, and we can make a positive impression.”
And Marotta also spoke about the need for a good performance from Inter captain Lautaro Martinez this evening.
“Above all, it would settle himself,” the Inter President said.
“At the moment, he’s not on the same sort of road as last season,” Marotta noted.
“The problem for the team is not a lack of scoring goals,” the Inter President added. “But if the captain gets on the scoresheet, that makes getting a result easier.”
