Inter took the field seeking revenge for a brace of 2-0 defeats in the 2022/23 Champions League group stages.

However, it was never going to be plain sailing for the Nerazzurri.

Despite their pre-match underdog status, the defending Serie A champions delivered a stunning performance.

Lautaro Martinez broke the deadlock with a sublime finish with the outside of his boot to put Inter 1-0 up at halftime.

Yet, Bayern Munich leveled the score five minutes from time through second-half substitute Thomas Muller.

Luckily, Inter had the final say.

Indeed, Carlos Augusto found Davide Frattesi inside the box, with the Italian midfielder turning the ball home to seal the win.

Inter became the first team to beat the Bavarians in Munich in a Champions League game in four years.

Indeed, Paris Saint-Germain last did that in 2021.

Asked how significant that achievement is, Bastoni replied: “It means a lot.

“We were coming off a huge disappointment in Parma, it really stung, and we wanted to bounce back.

“I’m proud of everyone – Lautaro and Thuram defended with us, and so did the midfielders.

“Now we have to recover, focus on the league, and then on the return leg.”

Then, Bastoni discussed the team’s collective effort.

“It’s a huge message, above all to ourselves,” he added. “We know we can do great things only if we play like this.

“Maybe there are teams with more individual talent, but together we are – and will continue to be – a real problem for anyone.”

However, he insists Inter must maintain their focus to progress into the semi-finals.

“Bayern are a great team – they hadn’t lost at home in four years. We’ll have to suffer again next week.

“Go all the way? Absolutely, otherwise we wouldn’t have even come to Munich!”
