Inter Milan have decided not to engage in a war of words with Napoli who have been on the attack over the past few days.
It all began in Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash between the Nerazzurri and the Partenopei at San Siro.
Even though the contest ended 1-1, the aftermath was anything but friendly.
The encounter included a controversial incident in the second half when referee Maurizio Mariani pointed to the spot for a challenge from Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa on Denzel Dumfries.
Despite the fact that Hakan Calhanoglu failed to convert the spot kick for once, the decision was enough to fuel a media melee.
Napoli coach Antonio Conte took the first punch, claiming the penalty was non-existent. The former Chelsea manager lashed out the match official as well as the VAR who decided not to intervene.
This promoted a reply from Conte’s old Juventus and Inter ally, Beppe Marotte. The Inter president felt the challenge did warrant a penalty kick.
Yesterday, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis entered the fray, describing Marotta’s comments as “out of place”.
But according to La Gazzetta dello Sport via FcInterNews, the Nerazzurri are ready to put the matter to bed.
The Italian champions have decided against replying to De Laurentiis’ words, preferring to take the high road.
As the source notes, this is reminiscent of the club’s stance last season when Juventus were breathing down their neck in the title race in the middle of the season.
At the time, former Bianconeri coach Max Allegri aimed some light-hearted digs towards Inter. This included comments like “robbers and cops” and “Djokovic vs Sinner”.
Nevertheless, his Inter counterpart Simone Inzaghi avoided getting himself embroiled in media warfare. And in the end, the results proved him right.
Therefore, Inter have decided to adopt a similar stance this time around. Inzaghi is asking his players to keep quiet, work hard and do their talking on the pitch.
