Former Inter Milan and Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder believes Denzel Dumfries will leave Simone Inzaghi’s ranks.

During a comprehensive interview at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, as reported by Calciomercato, Sneijder offered his verdict on Inter’s chances of securing Champions League glory.

Sneijder was part of the iconic Inter squad in the early 2010s. Coached by Jose Mourinho, the Nerazzurri lifted an unprecedented ‘treble’ in 2010.

The 40-year-old was a vital member of the team.

Many considered him the leading Ballon d’Or candidate that year. However, Barcelona legend Lionel Messi beat him to the punch.

Sneijder left Inter to join Galatasaray in 2012. But the Nerazzurri have always stayed in his heart.

The Dutchman sees the defending Serie A holders as hot favorites to win the Scudetto.

“I believe Inter will have a great season again in Serie A,” he said.

Despite a dismal 2-2 draw at Genoa, Sneijder backs Simone Inzaghi’s charges to bounce back.

He thinks Piotr Zielinski will help Inter thrive in domestic competitions.

“They drew the first game in Serie A with Genoa yes, but it’s only the first game, right? They have inserted some new players. I mention above all Piotr Zielinski in midfield, but he was not there.”

“They need time to adapt, but I am convinced that they will have a great season again.”

However, Sneijder remains concerned about Inter’s chances in Europe.

“But the Champions League… Last season, I had a different feeling – I believed in it more,” he continued. “This year, it will be much more difficult because the other teams have strengthened a lot.”

“This season, I would already be happy if Inter managed to get to the semi-finals.”

The ex-Netherlands international hailed the contribution from Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij at EURO 2024. Yet, he doubts the former will stay at Inter much longer.

“Dumfries and De Vrij have both done very well in the national team. Dumfries, it was said that he had to be sold. Yes, he is not the absolute starter, but I think he is an excellent full-back,” he stated.

“You know what players can be like when they’re not playing: they start complaining and want to leave.”

“De Vrij played at the European Championships, and I’m not sure he expected to be a first-team player in the national team.”

“But he did very well at the European Championships and will certainly stay at Inter for a couple of more years.”

“Maybe Dumfries will leave this year or next year.”
