Inter Milan Vice-President Javier Zanetti wants the Nerazzurri to be right among the top teams in the Champions League.

The Nerazzurri executive and former captain spoke to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews. He also hailed his team’s performance in yesterday’s 4-0 Serie A win over Atalanta.

Today, Inter learned what their schedule will be in the Champions League “league phase.”

The Nerazzurri will kick off their campaign in Europe’s top club competition with an away trip to Manchester City in a little under three weeks’ time.

That fact underscores how difficult of a task it will be to go on a deep run in the Champions League.

But Inter have already been here before.

Two seasons ago, the Nerazzurri reached the final of the competition. There, they met City, and went toe-to-toe with the English juggernauts, despite losing 1-0.

Last season brought European disappointment for Inter.

The Nerazzurri had thought they were cruising in their round of sixteen tie against Atletico Madrid.

However, a lack of clinical finishing followed by a late collapse saw the Nerazzurri bomb out of the competition against the La Liga side.

Zanetti: “Inter Want To Be Protagonists In The Champions League”

This season Inter will believe that they can make it a different story.

The Nerazzurri will believe that they can have a campaign much closer to two seasons ago than to last season. They could even aim to do one better.

And after Inter’s run to the final, other big sides in Europe also regard them as one of the favourites in the competition.

Nerazzurri Vice-President Zanetti commented that “We’re going into the international break now, and then the derby.”

“We’re used to preparing for each match down to the smallest details,” he continued.

“Because of the great work that our coach has done.”

As far as the Champions League, Zanetti said that “We want to be protagonists.”

“And we’ve created all the conditions necessary to do so.”

“We’ll be coming up against great teams. But we’ll be ready for any challenge.”

And of yesterday’s win over Atalanta, Zanetti said that “I’m very happy about last night.”

“It was a great match from our team,” he added. “We hope to keep going like that.”
