Cristian Chivu will seek his first high-profile victory in charge of the Nerazzurri when Inter take on Arsenal tonight.

Indeed, the 45-year-old has already lost two heavyweight European clashes to Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.

As a result, Inter’s hopes of securing a second consecutive top-eight finish are hanging by a thread.

However, the Serie A leaders can draw confidence from their positive Champions League record against the Gunners.

They’ve won two of their three previous meetings with Arsenal at Europe’s top table, including last season’s 1-0 win here.

Yet, Hakan Calhanoglu, who scored the winning goal in that match, will not feature tonight due to injury.

Inter cannot drop points even without their talismanic playmaker if they’re to avoid the knockout playoff round.

“This is a strange format,” Marotta said. “It’s difficult to make predictions. There are many teams packed within just a few points, and even now we’re seeing some surprising results.

“We know we want to put in a positive performance and bring home an equally positive result. Then we’ll take stock at the final whistle.”

Then, he offered an update on Inter’s transfer plans.

“This is a poor transfer market, without opportunities that would raise the level of our squad.

“Ausilio and Baccin have to keep making enquiries, but at the moment, there isn’t an option that would genuinely improve us.

“Dumfries is also on the road to recovery and will be available again soon.”

Finally, Marotta commented on Inter’s pursuit of Dinamo Zagreb starlet Leon Jakirovic and his relationship with Zvonimir Boban.

“We’re two serious professionals, and we know Dinamo Zagreb have some very interesting players.

“My colleagues have made enquiries and I hope we can reach a conclusion. I’d be happy to add this very interesting player to our squad, also with the Under-23s in mind.

“Dinamo are a factory of young talent; we’re very pleased with Sucic. In the end, it’s the president who has the right to accept the best offer.
