Inter president Beppe Marotta has thrown his full support behind head coach Cristian Chivu ahead of tonight’s Derby d’Italia showdown between Inter Milan and Juventus.

Speaking to Sky Sport before kick-off, via FCInterNews, Marotta underlined both the importance of the fixture and his belief in Inter’s long-term project under Chivu.

Inter have won just two recent league clashes against Juventus.

However, both in seasons that ended with the Scudetto.

Marotta was asked what significance another win would carry.

“Above all, it would confirm our recent excellent performances and allow us to continue our momentum,” he said.

“It would be a great act of conviction with many matches still to play. But we face a very respectable opponent. We hope for a good match and a positive result.”

Reflecting on the reverse fixture earlier this season, Marotta admitted the result did not reflect the performance.

“We knew the team was and is strong. The first-leg match was influenced by episodes late on, but the performance was very positive. This is a transitional moment, we are not getting carried away by our position in the table. We want to confirm what we have shown on the pitch.”

Marotta also addressed Chivu’s impact since taking charge.

His appointment was not accidental. We made a considered choice, knowing the man, the former player and the youth-team coach. We didn’t compare him with other profiles, we went straight for him because we knew what he represented.”

He continued: “He has surprised us positively, but he is a professional with strong values who can play a leading role in the coaching landscape.”

Comparing this season to last, Marotta acknowledged lessons learned.

“Even last year the situation was similar. The experience helped us and will continue to help us understand that we must get the maximum from every competition we participate in.”

Inter remain active on three fronts, and squad management will be key.

“It will depend on us and our opponents. It will also depend on how we manage the physical condition of the players but Chivu is using them very intelligently.”

Tonight’s clash with Juventus, therefore, represents not only a pivotal moment in the title race but another opportunity to underline the faith Inter’s hierarchy have placed in their coach.
