Inter Milan could make the surprise decision to extend Yann Sommer’s contract beyond this summer, but the Swiss veteran’s fate depends entirely on what Josep Martinez decides to do with his own career according to reports.

Sommer was considered a certain departure, but that picture is now more nuanced.

Martinez may decide to seek a club where he can play regularly.

And, in that case, Inter would need a reliable backup for Vicario, and Sommer fits that bill perfectly.

Extending his deal to June 2027 would provide experienced cover without requiring significant investment.

The alternative backup option being considered is Filip Stankovic.

He could arrive cheaply from Venezia and develop under Vicario in anticipation of a future first-team role.

However, the prospect of purchasing two goalkeepers in the same window is not an idea that particularly appeals to the Inter hierarchy.
