Inter Player Ratings vs Udinese: Dumfries from Top to Flop

Inter slumped to a stunning 2-1 home defeat to Udinese in Cristian Chivu’s second Serie A game in charge. Kosta Runjaic’s side shocked Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on their way to posting their first league win of the season.

Nothing pointed in that direction, especially after Inter trounced Torino 5-0 on Chivu’s touchline debut last weekend. Furthermore, the Nerazzurri grabbed an early lead through Denzel Dumfries and seemed to be in complete control of proceedings.

However, Dumfries’ unfortunate handball opened the door to Udinese’s return midway through the first half. Keinan Davis embraced the gift as he converted the spot-kick to draw the Friulians level. Even then, little did anyone know that the visitors would turn the game on its head.

That’s precisely what happened in the 40th minute when Arthur Atta scored a stunner to complete the turnaround. Despite heading into halftime with a deficit, Inter were still the favorites to take three points. When Federico Dimarco found the net early in the second half, it seemed like the Nerazzurri could pull off a comeback.

Yet, VAR cut Inter’s celebrations short, finding Marcus Thuram fractionally offside in the build-up. Inter never stopped trying, but they couldn’t find a way to breach Udinese’s stubborn backline, which stood firm for the rest of the match.

Without further ado, let’s look at our Inter ratings.

Inter (3-5-2)

Yann Sommer – 5/10

Though he could’ve done nothing to stop either goal, the Swiss veteran didn’t have any important saves throughout the match.

Yann Bisseck – 4/10

Had he been more proactive, Atto may not have had enough time and space to unleash that lethal strike toward the end of the first half. The German cannot be proud of his performance tonight.

Francesco Acerbi – 6/10

The aging center-back held up his end of the bargain against Davis, winning many aerial duels against the robust striker while positioning himself close to perfection.

Alessandro Bastoni – 5/10

Though he was decent at the back, the Italian star lacked composure on the ball as his attempted crosses often flew well off the mark.

Federico Dimarco – 6/10

Unlucky to see his rocket missile of a strike disallowed for an offside earlier in the move. However, other than that moment, he barely had any influence on the game.

Petar Sucic – 7/10

After a remarkable Serie A debut, the Croatian midfielder had a quieter night, yet he was omnipresent in the build-up play and had his hand in Dimarco’s overturned equalizer.

Hakan Calhanoglu – 5/10

Back to the starting XI after a turbulent summer, the Turkish playmaker was a mere shadow of his former self, failing to provide a much-needed spark from deep in the midfield.

Nicolo Barella – 6/10

The diminutive ace didn’t lack the energy or desire, but his tireless runs lacked the end product. Often lacked precision with his final delivery.

Denzel Dumfries – 6/10

Sneaked in at the back post to tap home Thuram’s erratic attempt, the Dutchman was off to a flying start, only to ruin it all with a clumsy handball.

Marcus Thuram – 7/10

Although he didn’t mean to assist Dumfries, his moment of inspiration helped Inter find a breakthrough. Yet, he should’ve put home a close-range header at the start of the second half.

Lautaro Martinez – 3/10

It was another disappointing night for the Inter captain as he never had a clear sight of goal. Despite fighting for every possession, El Toro cut a frustrated figure up front.
