The wait is almost over as Inter are ready to make their San Siro debut in this Champions League campaign. The Nerazzurri will play on Tuesday, 30 September at 21:00 CEST for the second matchday of the group stage against Slavia Prague. In the opening round, Chivu's side secured a 2-0 away victory over Ajax thanks to a brace from Thuram.
The upcoming game against Slavia will be the third European meeting between the two sides, after their group stage clashes in the 2019/20 season. Back then, Inter drew 1-1 at San Siro in the opening game thanks to a goal from Barella, and won 3-1 in Prague, with Lautaro Martínez scoring a brace and a goal from Romelu Lukaku.
Inter's record against Czech teams speaks for itself: the Nerazzurri have won their last four Champions League games against opponents from the Czech Republic with an overall score of 10-1, keeping a clean sheet in the most recent of these games.
The Nerazzurri captain has already made his mark in Europe against Slavia Prague, scoring his first Champions League brace. In November 2019, at the Fortuna Arena, Lautaro opened the scoring before netting another, playing a crucial role in Inter's 3-1 victory. For the Argentinian player, it was one of his first nights in the limelight in the Champions League, a glimpse into the journey that has since seen him become a leader and pillar for the team. Playing Slavia again brings back that memorable moment in his European career.
Two standout moments, two assists. Against Ajax, Hakan Çalhanoglu dominated the midfield with composure, setting up Thuram for both goals that led to the 2-0 victory. It is only the second time in Inter's history that a player has delivered two assists for the same teammate in a Champions League game, after Lukaku's assist to Lautaro against Slavia in 2019. A thread weaving together the past and the present.
In his Champions League debut, Alessandro Bastoni stood out for both his skill and courage in his judgement. His 19 line-breaking passes disrupted the opponent's pressure, created passing opportunities, and allowed Inter to build sustained attacks. The statistic not only demonstrates the defender's key role in build-up play, but also represents a record for the entire 2024/25 edition.
Slavia Prague, coached by Jindřich Trpišovský, have got their season off to the right start after winning the league title last year. After ten matchdays, they sit second with 24 points, just one behind Sparta Prague, who are top of the table. They have secured seven wins and three draws without having lost a single match, with 21 goals scored and seven conceded. Trpišovský's side are in great form, having won four out of their last five matches against Mlada Boleslav, Karvina, Sokol Brozany, and Dukla, with their only draw coming at Slovan Liberec.
Slavia are making their Champions League comeback after three seasons. The Czech side began their game with a 2-2 draw against Bodo Glimt. After taking a 2-0 lead, the Norwegian side made a comeback and scored two goals in the last 12 minutes of the game. Coach Jindřich Trpišovský has been leading Slavia for nine seasons, during which he has won four league titles and four national cups. Slavia are expected to line up against the Nerazzurri in a 3-5-2 formation with Stanek in goal; Mbodji, Zima, and Holes in defence; Dorley, Zafeiris, Provod, Sadilek, and Doudera in midfield; and the attacking duo Chory and Kusej.
