Inter talks for Romero stall amid La Liga interest

Inter Milan’s pursuit of Cristian Romero has hit a stumbling block, with negotiations over the defender’s personal terms failing to produce an agreement and opening the door for interest from Spain.

While Inter remain keen to sign the Tottenham centre-back, TEAMtalk reports that talks with the Argentina international’s representatives have stalled because of a significant gap between the club’s salary offer and the player’s demands. Negotiations have not collapsed, but there has been little progress in recent days.

Tottenham are understood to have already reached an agreement in principle with the Serie A champions over a deal worth €40 million, leaving personal terms as the main obstacle to completing the transfer.

The delay has prompted Romero’s representatives to explore alternative options, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid all keeping a close watch on the 28-year-old’s situation. According to the report, Romero’s camp are using the current impasse to assess whether a move to La Liga — the player’s preferred destination — can be engineered before the transfer window closes.

Despite that interest, none of the Spanish clubs have advanced discussions to the same level as Inter. No formal negotiations with Tottenham or talks over personal terms are believed to have matched the progress already made by the Italian champions, while there is no guarantee any of the La Liga sides would better Inter’s financial package.

Inter remain determined to strengthen their defence and have already completed the signing of John Stones on a free transfer. The club’s long-term plan is reportedly to partner the England international with Romero if an agreement can eventually be reached.

Tottenham, meanwhile, appear resigned to the possibility of losing the World Cup winner this summer. New head coach Roberto De Zerbi recently admitted he wanted to respect the wishes of players seeking a new challenge, although Romero’s future remains unresolved while negotiations continue.

For now, Inter remain in pole position, but unless the two parties bridge the gap over personal terms, Spain could yet emerge as the defender’s next destination.
