Inter to reward Chivu with new contract regardless of title success

Reports in Italy claim that Inter are set to show their faith in head coach Cristian Chivu by handing him an extension to his contract, which is currently set to expire at the end of the 2026-27 season.

Inter want to lock down head coach Chivu

Chivu, in his first full season as a head coach in the senior game, has taken Inter from the depths of their disappointment following last season’s 5-0 humiliation against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, and within the space of 10 months, has developed a side that now sits seven points clear at the top of the Serie A table with 10 games to go.

There have been some recent reports in Italy claiming that the pressure is on Inter following their 1-0 defeat against city rivals Milan in the league last weekend, which cut the Nerazzurro lead at the top of the table from 10 points to seven, but La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that this ‘pressure’ is more on the players than it is on the head coach.

At the time of Chivu’s appointment at the beginning of last summer, the 45-year-old head coach put pen to paper on a relatively short-term contract: A two-year deal that would run until the end of the 2026-27 campaign.

That means that Chivu will be heading into the final year of his deal this summer, despite being widely expected to claim the Scudetto at the end of the 2025-26 season.

La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that an extension to Chivu’s contract is a necessity for Inter. Reports elsewhere suggest that Chivu could extend his deal until the end of the 2027-28 season with an option to renew by an additional 12 months.
