Inter Tracking Lazio Goalie After U-Turn in the Role

Josep Martinez continues to gain points in the eyes of the Inter hierarchy and is close to earning the starting job ahead of next season, as the talks with Guglielmo Vicario have cooled off. Yann Sommer is unlikely to stay as a backup. The Nerazzurri would eye a veteran at that point and have shortlisted Ivan Provedel, TuttoSport informs (via MSN).

The Spaniard has shown well in the last couple of months after solving some personal and physical problems. Christian Chivu and the management are seriously mulling over promoting him. It’d be an economically-driven decision as well. The Spurs goalie’s price tag is a little more expensive than they’d like it to be. Plus, they’d also spend for a young no.2 in such a scenario.

If Inter stuck with Martinez, they’d save at least €20M. Instead, he wouldn’t stay to deputize a different shot-stopper. Provedel had been solid this campaign before injuring his shoulder. Lazio unearthed Edoardo Motta after he went down. Plus, Christos Mandas will return from a loan spell at Bournemouth and had also been reliable in the past, setting up a proper logjam.

The Nerazzurri signed the 27-year-old from Genoa for €14M in 2024. He has appeared 20 times with them, allowing 13 goals and securing 11 clean sheets. He has one cap with Spain.

Our Take on Inter and Josep Martinez

They kind of have to try him as the no.1 to justify their previous investment, although they’d likely recoup it pretty easily if they didn’t. Considering Sommer’s up-and-down performance this year and their potent offense, he wouldn’t kill them even if he weren’t great. Plus, there don’t seem to be can’t-miss opportunities in the role on the transfer market for now.
