All set: after Inter's 2-0 victory over Ajax in the Champions League, the Nerazzurri are back in action to face Sassuolo at San Siro, on Serie A Matchday 4. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:45 CEST on Sunday 21 September. For the first time this season, Chivu's side will wear their Third Kit, against the Neroverdi.
Inter and Sassuolo have a completely balanced fixture history: 10 wins each and two draws. With 54 shots and 56 crosses from open play, the Nerazzurri lead the attacking statistics and they will look to reach 10 goals in their first four games of the season for the sixth year in a row.
Lautaro Martínez has a special connection with Sassuolo: he made his Serie A debut on 19 August 2018 at the MAPEI Stadium, and got his first brace in the league against the Neroverdi in October 2019, scoring five overall against them. With a goal, our captain would overtake Sandro Mazzola on 116 goals, becoming our fifth best goal scorer in Serie A history. The only players above him would be Meazza, Lorenzi, Nyers and Altobelli.
Three goals and an assist in our first three games: Marcus Thuram has started the season very strong. The French forward has been involved in at least one goal in every game so far, a record repeated for the first time since November-December 2020, when he managed four games in a row. His pace and ability to get in behind are key assets of the Nerazzurri attack.
Nicolò Barella is consistency personified. Inter's number 23 is one of the three players to have provided an assist in each of the last ten Serie A seasons. Energy, balls in behind and refined technique make him unmissable in the Nerazzurri midfield.
Since joining Serie A (2017/18), Hakan Çalhanoglu is one of four midfielders in Europe's top five leagues to have reached 50 goals and 50 assists. With Inter, the Turkish-man has scored ten from outside of the box: the only player better than him, in the same period, is Kevin De Bruyne (13).
Sassuolo, back in Serie A after just one year in the second tier, have won three points in their first three games, scoring three and conceding five. They lost their opening game of the season 2-0 to Napoli. Then, another loss, this time 3-2 to Cremonese. They got their first win of the season in their last game: 1-0 at the Mapei Stadium against Lazio. Fabio Grosso's side actually won their first game of the season, against Catanzaro, in the first round of the Coppa Italia. Grosso usually opts for a 4-3-3 with Maric, a four-man defence of Walukiewicz, Idzes, Muharemovic and Doig, a midifeld made up of Vranckx, Matic and Koné, and the forward three of Berardi, Pinamonti and Laurienté.
