Inter Women return to winning ways!

Article image:Inter Women return to winning ways!

A great victory for Gianpiero Piovani’s team: after their defea to Juventus and elimination from the Coppa Italia against Sassuolo, Inter Women bounced back with a big win against Fiorentina. The Nerazzurre played with real focus and emerged victorious thanks to goals from Cambiaghi and Magull. This victory sees Inter maintain second place in the league with 37 points.

The two teams initially approached the match cautiously, with a lot of the action taking place in the middle of the pitch. To create something in attack, a moment of class was needed, and that is exactly what Michela Cambiaghi produced. Indeed, the Nerazzurri attacker received the ball on the right and made space for herself with a fantastic backheel. Inter then swiftly moved the ball from right to left, with Csiszar picking out Serturini, who got the better of Erzen and sent in a perfect cross for Cambiaghi to head home in the sixth minute.

Despite the Nerazzurre's opener, it wasn't a hugely eventful affair, with Csiszar, Magull and Tomaselli making it difficult for the Viola in midfield. Fiorentina were forced to go down the flanks, from which Faerge, Pedersen and Snerle repeatedly tried to trouble Inter's backline with dangerous crosses. In the 15th minute, a Bonfantini header was saved by Runarsdottir, while the same Viola player then failed to properly connect with the ball from the middle of the area (27'). In the 35th minute, an injured Janogy was replaced by Bredgaard, who gave something for Inter to think about down the left flank. The Nerazzurre were compact and looking to get the ball forward quickly to make the most of Serturini's energy. The first half finished with Inter one to the good.

After the restart, Fiorentina went on the attack as they looked for an equaliser. The pace of the game changed, with both teams leaving more spaces. In the 50th minute, Milinkovic intervened to thwart Bonfantini, while, a minute later, Polli failed to convert a Merlo cross with her head. With 64 minutes on the clock, Bowen burst forward and sent in a ball that landed at the feet of Serturini, who fired into the side-netting. Fiorentina changed their shape as Boquete and Toniolo entered the fray, and the Viola began to push up the pitch. This, however, left Inter with more space to exploit, and Cambiaghi came inches away from scoring her second of the day in the 66th minute.

At the other end, Catena twisted her body to head towards goal, but Runarsdottir kept it out. Just as Fiorentina were enjoying their best spell of the game, Inter doubled their advantage on the counter: Tomaselli found Magull with a fantastic through ball, and the German made no mistake with just Fiskerstrand to beat. The goal discouraged Fiorentina, who no longer found the energy to attack. Piovani slowed the game down with his substitutions, and, in the 88th minute, Inter came close to a third goal through Andres. Runarsdottir then took centre stage in stoppage time, turning a long-range effort from Bonfantini behind. From the resulting corner, the same striker fired over from a good position.
