Barcelona’s win over Newcastle United last night was historic in many ways, for the Catalans simply demolished them by a 7-2 scoreline and took an 8-3 win on aggregate to qualify for the quarterfinals.

While the first half was hard-fought, the team did step up and put their foot on the accelerator after the break, scoring four goals and taking the tie completely away from Eddie Howe’s side.

In the end, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha both scored two goals each, while Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, and Marc Bernal scored goals to ensure the comprehensive win.

There were, however, other milestones reached on the night as well as relayed by OptaJose.

Two young gems

Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez were two of the team’s biggest attacking protagonists on the night, and both players achieved special milestones with their performances.

Having scored aged 18 years and 248 days, Yamal became the youngest player in the history of the UEFA Champions League to score ten goals in the competition, taking down the previous record which was held by Kylian Mbappe.

The Real Madrid star hit the same number of goals back in 2017 and was aged 18 years and 350 days at the time, meaning Yamal has done the same in over 100 days less.

Fermin, meanwhile, racked up his tenth goal contribution in the UEFA Champions League this season with his calm finish in the second-half.

Including his assist and goal against Newcastle, he now has six goals and four assists in the current edition alone.

With that achievement, he has become the first Spanish Barcelona player to reach double-digit figures in goal contributions in a single season of the premier competition.

Veteran record

While Yamal and Fermin broke records on one end of the scale, Barcelona also had Robert Lewandowski break records at the other end of the spectrum with his brace.

For starters, the player aged 37 years and 209 days became the oldest player in UCL history to score twice in a single game, overtaking the former record holder Filippo Inzaghi, who scored two goals for Inter Milan against Real Madrid in 2010, aged 37 years and 86 days.

Further, the player also cemented his place in the Champions League history books by scoring against a record 41st different opponent in the competition.

He is now first on the list, ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored against 40 and 38 clubs respectively.
