Internal criticism is growing: Eberl confidant faces being let go by Bayern

FC Bayern may be facing another personnel change in its sports department. The future of chief scout Nils Schmadtke appears to be increasingly uncertain. Although sporting director Max Eberl continues to hold his close confidant in high regard, criticism is growing within the club.

Schmadtke has served as head scout for the German record champions since 2024. His contract runs through the summer of 2027. Whether he will see it through to the end or extend it afterward remains to be seen. Recently, indications of a possible parting of ways have been mounting.

Eberl had previously defended his head scout publicly and emphatically. “The fact is: Nils still has a year left on his contract, and to me, he’s one of the best scouts and roster planners in Germany. That’s why we signed him in the first place,” the Bayern sporting director explained in September.

Internal criticism of Schmadtke is growing

Behind the scenes, however, Schmadtke’s work does not appear to be viewed equally positively by all those in charge. As reported by *kicker*, internal criticism of the 37-year-old has recently resurfaced. This criticism is said to have even intensified in the meantime.

According to the report, a parting of ways is therefore expected within the club. When this might happen, however, remains unclear. The collaboration could end no later than when his contract expires in the summer of 2027.

It is interesting to note that Schmadtke still has prominent supporters. In addition to Eberl, President Herbert Hainer is also said to be in favor of him staying on.

Eberl and Schmadtke, in particular, have a long history of working together. The two previously collaborated at Borussia Mönchengladbach. It therefore comes as little surprise that Eberl publicly supports his chief scout.

Nevertheless, it appears that the club’s sports management may be restructured in this area.

Bayern is already exploring potential successors

According to *kicker*, the Munich club is reportedly already considering how the scouting department might be structured in the future. Both internal and external options are being evaluated.

No specific candidates for a potential successor to Schmadtke have been named yet. In any case, a final decision will not be made until those in charge have found a convincing solution.

Filling the chief scout position could also have implications for squad planning and transfer market activities. FC Bayern would have to redistribute responsibilities accordingly and allow the new structures to settle in.

However, club officials appear willing to accept this risk. For Schmadtke, this means that despite the support of Eberl and Hainer, the outlook does not necessarily point to a long-term future in Munich at this time.

Although his contract runs through the summer of 2027, if internal criticism continues to mount and Bayern finds a suitable successor, their collaboration could potentially end sooner.
