Simone Inzaghi has outlined why Al-Hilal moved for Ollie Watkins as Karim Benzema departed, framing the signing as faith in the England striker’s potential.

According to Goal.com, Benzema left by mutual consent before Watkins agreed a three-year deal as part of a broader rebuild of the attack.

Speaking before the postponed third-round meeting with Al-Ahli, Inzaghi thanked Benzema and said he was honoured to have coached him. He added that Watkins has high qualities, was tracked since last season by him and the sporting management, and that he admires the forward’s skills and style.

Inzaghi stressed Watkins was not a reaction to Benzema’s exit but a long-planned target, viewed as a key option for the road ahead.

He also addressed selection, noting Watkins and Hassan Tambakti trained with the group and that their involvement would depend on readiness in the final session.

On the Clasico, Inzaghi acknowledged Al-Ahli present a stern test after a recent defeat, but said Al-Hilal are prepared and will approach it with full force.
