The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been asked to investigate FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s role in the controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red card reversal, The Athletic reports.
There is widespread speculation that Infantino may have influenced the decision to overturn the United States striker’s automatic one-match suspension ahead of the World Cup last-16 clash with Belgium.
The IOC has now been called upon to review the situation despite Infantino’s vehement denial of any involvement, insisting that FIFA’s disciplinary bodies operate independently.
The request for an investigation came from FairSquare, a non-profit organisation that campaigns for stronger governance in sport while also focusing on labour rights and political repression.
The group argues that sports governing bodies must remain free from political influence to protect the integrity of competition.
Balogun was sent off during the US’ round-of-32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after receiving a straight red card for a challenge on Tarik Muharemovic.
Under FIFA’s World Cup regulations, a straight red card automatically carries a one-match suspension.
However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee later lifted the suspension, allowing the 25-year-old striker to feature in the last 16 clash against Belgium.
The US were eventually made to pay for that decision, suffering a humbling 4-1 defeat that ended their World Cup campaign even with Balogun leading the line.
The decision attracted further attention after US President Donald Trump admitted that he had personally contacted Infantino and requested that the incident be reviewed.
Infantino also acknowledged that he spoke with Trump about the matter but rejected suggestions that he influenced the disciplinary process.
He tried to downplay the severity of the situation by claiming that he communicates regularly with world leaders on a variety of issues and that this conversation was no different.
However, FairSquare isn’t buying it and have called for further investigation into an action they claim could violate the principles of sporting neutrality.
Interestingly, Infantino has served as an IOC member since 2020.
The Olympic Charter requires members to remain independent and free from political or commercial influence when carrying out their duties.
The IOC has confirmed it has received FairSquare’s request and will examine the matter before deciding whether any further action is necessary.
