Ipswich Town are ‘confident’ of signing Daniel Jebbison when his Sheffield United contract expires this summer.
It’s shaping up to be a dramatic end to the season for the Tractor Boys, with Kieran McKenna’s side sitting third in the table, behind Leeds United on goal difference.
However, Ipswich have a game in hand, which comes at Coventry City on Tuesday night, so they know that four points will guarantee them promotion to the Premier League.
The uncertainty about which division the side will be in can be problematic for the recruitment team, who no doubt have two lists of potential signings ahead of the window opening.
But, The Sun reporter Alan Nixon has claimed that Jebbison is a player that Ipswich want whether they win promotion or not.
The update states that there is confidence among the Suffolk side that they will finalise terms with Jebbison, who sees his deal at Bramall Lane expire in the coming months.
Yet, that doesn’t mean he would join Ipswich on a free transfer, as the 20-year-old is at an age where compensation would need to be agreed.
And, the report reveals that a package between the clubs is unlikely to be sorted, meaning that a fee would be decided by a tribunal.
This feels like a critical move for Jebbison, even at this stage of his career.
The England youth international made his mark for the Blades as a teenager, when he scored against Everton, making him the youngest player to score on their first start in the Premier League.
Whilst he has gone on to make over 30 appearances for Sheffield United over the past three years, he hasn’t truly established himself as a regular, which is understandable given his age. Plus, he hasn’t been helped with injuries, which have disrupted the current campaign for Jebbison.
So, he’s at a stage where he needs first-team football, and to find a club that will allow him to fulfil his undoubted potential.
On that front, McKenna could be the perfect coach for Jebbison, as the youngster has all the raw abilities that the Ipswich chief wants from a number nine.
Jebbison has a good physicality to his game, which is due to his height, but he also backs that up with real mobility, so he is a player who runs the channels and leads the press, and he can also play up top on his own.
Of course, there are areas of his game that need to improve, most obviously with his goal return and his finishing in front of goal. However, this is a player who has enormous potential, and Portman Road could be the ideal platform for Jebbison to show what he can do.
Ultimately, this is one to monitor ahead of the window opening, and whilst there may be more eye-catching deals done by Ipswich, particularly if they win promotion, this could be a shrewd bit of business by the club for the long-term if they can bring him in.
