Ipswich Town have been promoted to the Premier League after a 3-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at Portman Road.
Keiran McKenna’s team knew a win would be enough to earn an instant return to the top division, and started in dream fashion after goals from George Hirst and Jaden Philogene-Bidace but the hosts two goals head inside nine minutes.
Nerves eased, Ipswich controlled the contest and added a late third through Kasey McAteer to kickstart the promotion party. It’s a third promotion in four seasons for McKenna’s side.
Ipswich’s win condemns Millwall and Middlesbrough to the play-offs, with both having harboured automatic hopes had Ipswich slipped up. Millwall did beat Oxford 2-0 to miss out on automatic promotion, and a return to the top flight after a 36-year absence, by a point.
Middlesbrough’s 2-2 draw at Wrexham cost the latter a play-off place. The draw allowed Hull City to claim the final play-off place, following their 2-1 win over Norwich City. Wrexham’s hopes of a historic fourth consecutive promotion are over as a result.
Millwall will face Hull in the play-off semi-finals, with Southampton taking on Middlesbrough. The Saints leapfrogged ‘Boro into fourth after a 3-1 win at Preston. The semi-final ties will be over two legs, before a winner-takes-all play-off final at Wembley on May 23rd.
