Mehdi Taremi could make his Inter Milan full debut this weekend against Lecce, replacing Lautaro Martinez in the starting lineup.

The Iranian was arguably the standout performer in the club’s pre-season friendlies. He scored five goals in three outings before sustaining a muscular injury.

So while he wasn’t fit enough to start, the 32-year-old managed to make his first Serie A appearance last weekend, coming in as a second-half substitute during the 2-2 draw against Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

He even played a part in Marcus Thuram’s second goal which gave the Nerazzurri a temporary lead.

But according to Il Corriere dello Sport via FcInterNews, Taremi has now regained his full fitness.

The former Porto striker has overcome his physical problem and is ready to make his first official start for the club.

The Roman newspaper thus tips Taremi to replace his captain in the starting lineup.

As the source explains, Martinez will earn some rest as his condition remains far from optimal.

The 27-year-old was the last player to return from his summer vacation. Inzaghi gave him additional weeks of rest following Argentina’s triumphant Copa America campaign.

Moreover, Lautaro agreed to cut his vacation short by a few days when the club asked him to return following Taremi’s injury.

The skipper gritted his teeth to start in the Serie A opener at Marassi amidst the lack of options upfront.

Therefore, Inzaghi can now afford to drop his skipper and allow him to gradually gain match fitness thanks to Taremi’s full recovery.

The Iranian striker could thus link up with Thuram upfront in what would be his full Nerazzurri debut against Lecce.

The clash kicks off on Saturday at 20:45 CET. This will be the club’s first home encounter of the season.
