The arrival of Mehdi Taremi at Inter Milan can help guard the Nerazzurri’s squad against decline resulting from injury and fatigue.

Inter have signed Taremi on a free transfer from Porto.

The 32-year-old comes in as, numerically, a replacement for Alexis Sanchez in the Nerazzurri’s squad.

Last season, Sanchez and Marko Arnautovic were the two backup options in attack at Inter. They were behind Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram in the pecking order.

If Taremi is to be a backup option, he will certainly be a backup with a big reputation, pedigree, and goalscoring record.

But the Nerazzurri seem to have signed the Iranian for more than that.

Mehdi Taremi Guards Inter Milan Against Injury & Fatigue Decline

Last season, Martinez and Thuram staked a firm claim on the starting spots in attack for Inter.

The Argentine and French internationals both had outstanding individuals. Martinez was the top scorer for all of Serie A, whilst Thuram hit double digits for both goals and assists.

By and large, there were no doubts about the quality of Martinez and Thuram’s contribution. The pair powered Inter to the Serie A title.

But at key moments, some problems did emerge.

This was particularly the case in February and March. The Champions League round of sixteen tie against Atletico Madrid was a punishing test of Inter’s attacking depth.

Thuram played in the first half of the first leg but then had to come off with a muscle injury. The 26-year-old paid for constantly being on the pitch.

And Inter captain Martinez failed to score across the two legs of the tie. His disappointing performance was emblematic of Inter’s overall display.

Therefore, Inter are hoping that Taremi can push Martinez, Thuram, and the attack as a whole to another level next season.

Fighting for a starting spot with Martinez and Thuram certainly won’t be easy for the Iranian.

However, it will be a long season. Taremi will get his opportunities.

If the 32-year-old can be more than just an occasional backup option, then Martinez and Thuram can rest more.

Inter would have more room to avoid a situation like the tie against Atletico where their key men in attack look tired (Martinez) and risk injury (Thuram) right at the most important moments.

Taremi can give Martinez and Thuram more opportunities to rest and manage their minutes.

And the former Porto striker could even present another starting option when the big Champions League nights come around.
