Iran’s national team on Friday rebuffed Donald Trump’s suggestion they could be barred from the 2026 World Cup, insisting no one can exclude them.
According to L'Équipe, the US president wrote on Truth Social on Thursday that Iran should not take part in this summer’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada, citing security.
His intervention came as Iranian sporting authorities had themselves raised doubts about participation because of the war in the Middle East.
On Instagram, the team framed the World Cup as a historic, international event governed by FIFA rather than by any individual or country, addressing FIFA president Gianni Infantino in their message.
They also highlighted that, through a run of decisive wins by Iranian players, the national side were among the first to qualify. Their post added that no one could exclude Iran, arguing the only country at risk would be any host unable to guarantee the security of participating teams.
